Ophthalmology
The branch of medicine concerned with the study of the physiology, anatomy, and pathology of the eye and the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the eye.
Ophthalmologists specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders, vision measurements for glasses (refraction), eye muscle exercises (orthoptics), and the prevention of blindness and care of the blind. Some of the major causes of blindness in adults are cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, senile macular degeneration, retinal detachment and opacities of the cornea.
The Provider
The Assura Macclesfield LLP Ophthalmology Service is provided by Assura Macclesfield Limited Liability Partnership (LLP). Assura Macclesfield LLP is a partnership between local GPs and Assura Medical Limited. The Assura Macclesfield LLP Ophthalmology Service is a new NHS service, free to patients, commissioned by Central and Eastern Cheshire Primary Care Trust and will be run from the Assura Health and Wellness Centre.
What does the Service Offer?
All patients will be seen by an Ophthalmologist, Optometrist or technician who will undertake, as appropriate, slit lamp testing, Snellen chart assessment and field tests - to review the referrals received for a number of conditions:
● Red eyes ● Floaters and flashers ● Blurred vision ● Painful eyes ● Dry eyes ● Glaucoma ● ARMD ● Field loss ● Raised intra ocular pressure ● External eye disease ● Blepharitis ● etc
The benefit of this service will be to make informed decisions on whether onward referral is required for relatively minor eye problems. Possible next steps include:
- Discharge to primary care with management advice as appropriate
- Advice on over the counter medication
- Onward referral to hospital for surgery
- Advice on ongoing management
